ESTATE FRESH!
Circa 1905 Small Two Part
Can of Gerstendorfer Bros. "Sapolin" Paint!
I have been collecting/dealing in Antiques and Collectibles for well over 45 years. Most of the treasures that I acquire are direct from estates or houses. Over the time that I have been been doing this I have ended up setting aside items that were either of specific interest to me or that I felt were especially "unique and eclectic". This has ended up with my having a rather extensive "personal" collection. I am now at a point in my life that I have to limit this addiction and in fact actually downsize my "collection(s)!" I suggest that you consider adding me to your list of sellers that you follow as I will be offering many "decommissioned" treasures as well as the extensive new acquisitions that I continue to pursue in my semi-retirement!
This is from one of the most interesting estates that I have had the pleasure of being involved in, interesting from the wide variety of unique eclectic items. It was like walking into time capsule covering the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's.
I don't know what cosmetic force drove me to pick-up this can but it must have had an evil laugh as it has ended up being like opening Pandora's box! On the surface, Sapolin paints are relatively familiar to my generation. However, its history is well hidden in a multitude of ownerships over the years. It all started with Gerstendorfer Bros., a small
Company established in New York and Chicago to sell Gerstendörfer gold leaf products in the USA. Founded in 1843, Gerstendörfer is reported to be the "leading and most important" manufacturers of genuine gold leaf. Shortly after its establishment, Gerstendorfer Bros. expanded to their own manufacturer of various specialty paints including "Star Enamels". Their specialty was gold paints "that only experts can tell whether the same is made with genuine gold leaf or not." On January 17, 1903, Gerstendorfer Bros. registered the Sapolin trademark with the New York Department of State following up with registering the trademark with the U.S. Patent Office.
This wonderful, two part Gerstendorfer Bros. two part Sapolin paint can is labeled "Gold Glaze." The gold powder in the top can is mixed with the liquid in the lower can just prior to its use. The paint is designed primarily for use on metal. The can is approximately 2" in diameter x 2¾" tall. It retains a fair amount of its original contents.
