    Description

Here is a lot of two antique, 19th Century paint sample leaflets. The first one is from the Averill Chemical Paint Co., "House-keepers' paints". This company
was granted the first federal trademark in 1870. The trademark (an eagle with a ribbon) is not on the sample so this is probably from the 1860s. The sample contains 20 different paint colors. Some of the colors have chipped or have marks. The top part of the leaflet is still attached but has torn at the fold and will likely come loose at some point.
The second sample is from F.W. Devoe & Co.: "Pure lead and zinc paint, ready for use." This one contains 40 paint samples. It even provides codes "to be used in telegraphing for these paints. Ship by rail...code word - yoke. Ship by boat...code word  - yard..." Some of the sample colors have marks or tiny chips. There are handwritten notes in pencil.
